Week 17 Recap
Bitcoin reached yet another new all time high of $17,100 USD ($22,000 CAD). I've been personally waiting for a nice hard correction to pick up more but we have yet to see a really drastic retreat.
News this week:
- Bitcoin futures are now available as of today via the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). You can view prices, volume, and other information for these futures here. So far everything has been fairly smooth but I wouldn't relish trading Bitcoin futures on an exchange that is only open during the week, and halts trading when the price swings 10% or more in a day. Bitcoin futures will also be available from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) on December 18th which is a 23 hour a day operation, however it halts trading for the rest of the day after a 20% swing according to some random article I read. To get a break down on the differences between CBOE and CME Bitcoin futures, check out amansaggu26's helpful post. There have already been a handful of tweets related to folks getting margin called) due to volatility (Bitcoin is surging as we speak)...can't wait to see what kind of volumes CBOE and CME rack up! Here's a quick overview of what Bitcoin futures are in a post by v01a7i1e.
- Nicehash got hacked this week to the tune of 60+ million USD. Sad to see their service disappear; I'd be surprised if they recover from this (assuming it wasn't an inside job). I know several folks who lost money in this hack.
- Coinbase had it's second major outage in less than two weeks on December 6th & 7th due to the explosive growth of their customer base (the iOS Coinbase app was in the top 10 this week on the app store!). Their engineering blog wrote a post portem for each outage and they're a fascinating read.
Week 17 Results
LiteCoin barely managed beat out Bitcoins huge gains this week by a mere 6 cents, making it this weeks winner with a gain of +8.61 USD (+43%). AEON dropped back and allowed NXT to take the overall lead in the experiment, becoming this weeks loser with a loss of -8.43 USD (-17%).

If you're Canadian and want to try the same thing, I use QuadrigaCX (wire transfer, interac online) and Coinbase (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX) to purchase bitcoin, ethereum, or litecoin to transfer to an exchange that supports all these alternative currencies. I used HitBTC to buy all 31 currencies, but many exchanges will work just as well.
